Chalice Woes....

Hi Guys

I just wanted to post this up to see if anyone can help me out. This is my last ditch effort... I'm slowly watching my chalice collection peel away. I've already checked my parameters and dosed my tank with interceptor twice. I'm not sure what I'm to do. One of my favs, the OS has gone from a full disk to a size of a nickel.

I'm not sure what could be causing this. My experience with this is limited so I'm open to learn. Anything will help.

Initial thoughts were Alk and Mag. But I've crossed that off my list- my parameters are all inline.

Here's what I've done:

When I first started to notice the recession - dipped chalices initially in Revive and TMPCC.
Dosed tank with Interceptor and WC after 10 hrs. Interceptor on the 4th day 12 hrs and WC after.
Placed all chalices in a seperate container and did a dip for 5-6 hrs with 1/4 of the pill.

Overall, some chalices looked better, but some of my older collections are still slowly receding.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Just curious why you dosed Interceptor? Did you have redbugs on your SPS? Have you checked salinity? This time of year, with the windows open and increased humidity, evaporation levels change.

Try to shade it if you didn't try it yet... If you have another system running that is not connected on your display put it there.

In my experience, once a chalice starts to recede the only thing that worked was to cut off the part that was receding. I've tried dipping witch seemed to help for a bit but it wouldn't solve the problem. The ones that I did not cut ended up dying, the ones that I did cut made it.

There is this discussion regarding the use of interceptor and treatment of receding chalices or lps. I don't have any RB on my sps and my salinity is at 1.025. Luckily, my house stays pretty cool.

Mark, I no longer have an angel...(if you're thinking about the old multicolor, i lost that one during the crash of '08)

Once I take care of this... I may consider another.

Yeah, I have it currently shaded under a ledge. I'm really crossing my fingers.

Yeah I thought about that, but the way the chalice looks(brown and peeling)... I figured its better not to stress it out anymore. I may consider cutting it as my last hail mary.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'm just not sure what I haven't covered. I'm considering increasing my feeding to see if the extra nutrients will stimulate recovery. But I haven't seen any feeders out.

Any other thoughts? I really appreciate the everyone's help

Through the years of collecting chalice i notice that some chalices like higher Alk. I usually have my Alk at 8.5 but when some of chalice didn't look too good so i raise my Alk and all has stop receding and stop getting the white bleach spot. I now have my Alk and 9.5 to 10. Hope this help but raise the Alk slowly just so you don't shock anything else in the tank if you do decide to go this route.

Thanks Kien! I just up'd my alk a little bit. I'm really hoping this works. It's disheartening to see my chalices that I've grow over years (so friggen slow) peel away away so fast.

Jay,

You should ask a friend to house your chalices until you're able to figure out what went wrong. Chalices are very resilient & will make a full recovery in the right conditions.

Any sudden temp change?

+1 to fragging and frag generously or else its pointless. Infections for chalices from what I have read grow under the skin, thats why it looks normal upon first glance then you can see the skin is barely attached when you look closely.

Kien, I'm still slowing up'ing my alk. Thanks guys. As of now, the chalices seem a little puffier then before, but I don't think the recession has stopped. I'll give the chalices a couple of days... if it doesn't rebound, I'm going to frag it.

I never liked fragging...

Does anyone have any experience with KZ's LPS aminos? I wonder if there's any value to it over the regular AAHC.

It's weird, there are a few chalices that seem to be doing just fine. My watermelons are super puffy.

well, I took the plunge and cut the chalice. If this doesn't work, I'm lost for words.... and a couple of chalices.

I know you said you treated the tank with Interceptor but have you actually tried to dip them in stronger dose? Cerissa did that with her and surprisingly, the recession stopped. I dunno...may worth a try? I'll try to get her to post some details on how strong or how long she dipped it for.

Thanks. I did dip it in some TMPCC which has iodine.

Robert, Thanks for your reply. I actually did dose the tank again a couple of days ago at a higher dosage ~3x. I believe Friday morning before my commute...and did a water change late Saturday night (almost 40hrs in)

I wanted to thank everyone for their help and support. My OS looks like its finally turning around! it's starting to turn green again. It's the smaller than a dime, but I had to be aggressive.

now all it needs to grow!! grow baby grow!
