i honestly never knew this until my LFS guy mentioned this yesterday that one of his chalices, no bigger than pancake, put out a sweeper over a foot long that killed about 1/8th of an acan colony. CRAZY!!

anyone got pics of their chalices putting sweepers out?

No pics, but I can confirm that my le blue chalice throws out some long sweepers at night. My echinos have sweepers, but much shorter. Maybe an inch or two long.

Yes, some chalice do have long sweepers. Fortunately, none of mine do. They are some of the meanest corals in the tank even tho they don't look that menacing. I've had lords and echinata lose battles when they touch by accident.

Echinos and chalice are the same. Chalice is just a term or common name used for corals that come from the genera Echinophyllia, Echinopora, Oxypora, Mycedium, and others.

I had an echino eat an RBTA once, those tings are brutal for sure!

yeah.. some do have longer sweepers than others... the best time to see how long the sweepers is at night when the lights are off...

Recently my watermelon chalice fell on a ORA duncan colony and it wipe out 3 large polyps of the duncan overnight.

I think the ones with the long sweepers are Mycedium. They are in the same family as the echinos and manytimes look about the same and are sold as chalice at many places. I have a Mycedium that will put out 2 inch sweepers. It is recomended to put them a ways from everything else.

here's the Mummy trying to attack.. LoLz...

the sweepers were atleast 1" long.. good thing I moved most of what's around her... :)

If a chalice falls on a brain or shroom, the chalice looses. I think we should start a tread on that. Who wins & looses? It helped me a great deal for placement of corals.

great idea... :)

Jeni, you should start a thread over at Other Discussion thread regarding this since you came up with it... :)

I recently got a bright green chalice that looked great when put into my tank. It proceeded withing a couple of hours (during the day) to reach out and "digest" a nice orange and blue ricordea that was a couple of inches away. Great looking but nasty coral.
