Hi All

My husband and I are new to Marine Fish Keeping and have had our Aquarium for 4 months now.
We had a supposed expert come in and set up and as we are going along we are understanding and learning more and more.
The person that set our tank up (240l) with 210l of water placed 2 x Oase 250 filter cannisters underneath for operation.
After researching Cannister filters we would like to change and instead of having 2 just have 1. We have done some research and have found a cannister which will operate for up to a max of either 650l or 1000l of water.
Our question is if we remove one of the 250 units and replace the new more powerful one along side the other 250 unit for a certain amount of time would this be ok? Then once the more powerful unit was ready remove the 2nd 250 one so we only have one filter cannister underneath.
Is this possible to do? What effect would or could this have? Any suggestions of doing it differently?

This is for a marine aquarium could you please explain media? The current filter cannisters have been in place for 4 months now

Removing any canisters from any reef tank will never harm, you can remove them all if you want. The tank itself has enough surface area

The canister filter could hold mechanical filtration like sponges or it could be filled with just biological filtration like ceramic media. Or both. The media inside determines what the canister filter is doing

Hi

Thank you for your help so far i found the below about the filters we have:

The Oase BioMaster 250 External Filter provides effective filtration for aquariums up to 250 litres. Engineered for reliability and longevity, the BioMaster multi stage canister filter features an optimum combination of mechanical and biological filtration to produce clean and healthy water for your fish.

I dont know why this guy put 2 oase 250 in instead of just one more powerful filtration.
We are looking at purchasing the Fluval FX6 so we would only have one unit instaed of 2 but not sure about how to do the swap over without cauing any damage to the tank

The FX6 has baskets that you might be able to transfer the media that's inside the Oases. Just because the FX6 manual says to put "this" or "that" in it doesn't mean you have to run it that way. I would suggest putting the media in in the order that it states in the manual. I believe the flow rate on the Oase 250 is 250gph, while the flow rate on the FX6 is 536gph, so one FX6 would be fine (perhaps a little overkill for your size tank) Not running the filter(s) for a short time is not going to harm anything. You're going to have to not run the FX6 anyway when you have to clean it.
