changing fish food

Hi guys

may be a silly question. but can i just switch my fish food without affecting their appetite?

I'm feeding them some pellets (local brand - see attached). I wanted to switch to a branded flakes.. any thoughts? warnings?

There won’t be any negative effects. There’s a small chance the fish won’t eat it but then you can try another brand without problems.

This is true. I rotate like crazy now and it boils down to whatever packet i grab from the freezer. A couple brands has food that my fish literally spit back out and others they devour. But no harm in rotating or switching stock.

I wouldn't overthink it. Consider life in a wild reef, they have to get by grabbing whatever floats by, so either they eat it or they don't. I used to feed pellets and flakes, but moved to frozen mainly because of relatively neutral buoyancy. Pellets tend to sink and flakes tend to float unless you pre-soak them. I find frozen stays suspended in the water longer so the fish can get it without it falling into the rocks or going down the overflow.

As a general recommendation, consider feeding multiple different foods (including frozen). This will give the fish variety and help to fill any nutritional gaps. Good luck!

I mentioned frozen because it is typically nutritionally balanced and convenient for most people. If it isn’t convenient then consider starting with fish, shrimp, clams, etc. from your local grocery and then at some point you can research what additives you can include to make your own nutritionally balanced food. I realize many only feed dry feed - IMO adding live/frozen foods will help your fish to thrive.
