I started with Instant ocean then started using red sea pro coral. after watching the long term storage video and the reading they got on the BRStv I was thinking of going back to instant ocean reef crystals (the price is a major drive), also any one have input on storing outside in a brute can??

I seem to remember a discussion of the various salts in the Reef Chemistry forum, including tests of the various salts, just a few weeks ago. A quick browse should turn that up.

A bunch of reefers use Instant Ocean and IO Reef Crystals, many for many years. It has performed well for many of us, and there don't seem to be any significant considerations for not using it.

As far as storing it outside in a brute can, I would not recommend that, as the Brute trashcan isn't airtight, so humidity would be likely to get inside. The salt would absorb the humidity and likely cake, or in extreme conditions you could end up with a barrel of brine.

Thanks for the input. I did see that thread just after I posted. As for storage I'll just have to keep making on demand[emoji30]

Hi @MCloudy21 - I'm wondering if I misunderstood your question about the Brute can. I thought you meant storing your salt in the can - did you mean making the salt water in the Brute can and keeping it outside until you needed it? If so, you should be fine doing that, with some caveats. Storing it that way for a couple / few weeks should be fine - I'd recommend keeping a powerhead or an airstone bubbling away in it so it doesn't get stagnant, and a heater so the water remains near the same temp as your tank. I'd also check the salinity right before using it in case some of the water evaporated between mixing and using. Other than that, you should be fine mixing it up in advance like that (within reason).

Thanks I was hoping to set up a auto water change using a jbj 3 head dose pump (1 new in, 1 old out and 1 for my part A) but I live in an apartment 1st floor and will need to use the run outside to keep the can of water. It was just a thought anyways don't know it the dose pump is good enough!!
