I am replacing my present sump with a larger one and adding a dual carbon/gfo reactor. I have a 180 gallon. Will this cause my tank to cycle? If it will, does anyone have a way to avoid that? What are your recommendations on how to go about changing it out. I just want to do it right with the least amount of stress for tank inhabitants. I'm changing it out to make more room for my skimmer and build a better refugium. Shoud I put live sand and chaeto or rubble and cheato. Also, I have a huge pod population down there. Will this process kill them?

So your going with the dual reactor...good choice...I dont think you will have a problem especially if your using the same water that came out ,,What do you have in the refuge now Rocks? I never did like sand down in there cause i always wanted my cheato to tumble and thats where i have my reactors outlet going to is the bottom of the sump where the cheato/rock is.. but im running a herbie style sump not a regular flow sump

What is a herbie sump.?? I like my Herbie drain ,but haven't heard of a sump.

Add the rubble with the chaeto. [better for the pods]
Doubtful this will cause a loss of pods. They will quickly find the sump again.

HAHA
You know what i mean, The Herbie style drain/sump

I am presently using rubble and chaeto and have been for a couple of years but the sump I've been using was a wet/dry and I took the bioballs out. I upgraded my skimmer to an Aqua C and it takes up almost all the free area, so much so that I can't take the tray out to clean anything. A real PITB. Hence, new sump!..lol Chaeto wouldn't grow because it can't get enough tumbling or light. It's not dying, but it's not growing either..it's just there... Nitrates and phosphates are high...I am hoping (keeping my fingers crossed) that this fixes the problem.

You got me there. :clap2:
I have plenty of pods in my sump because I don't use a sock full time.

budman....I was asking in case there was a different style sump I wasn't aware of.
My last tank had a Bean overflow. I never kicked in in the 2 1/2 years. So now its simply a Herbie.
