Changing Tank, thoughts on How and what to take

the title says it all.
I have a JBJ 45 gallon AIO that I converted to have a trigger systems crystals sumps. Been running over three 1/2 years. So I have a great tank going with a good amount of coral and fish

I’m planning on getting a Red Sea Reefer 250 as im restricted to size.
Obviously my rock with Corals

Recommendation on moving sand or just sifting it and removing creatures from it and replacing with new or half and half. And what about water as well.

I have a almost complete Complete APEX system with DOS and ATK

I want to keep everything I’m actually enlarging the size of the tank by about ten gallons. I’m asking what’s the best way to do it.
Do I use all new sand. Can I use some old sand. Can I use some old water

I swapped tanks at a yearish and was told don't, but please verify with more experienced folks.

But how did you do it

Put rock in buckets and critters in another. New sand. Moved rock. Water. Then fish.

I bought 30 gallon garbage cans pumped water out of old tank into garbage can put rock & coral in one fish in the other made all new water and put new sand in as well . Went from a 75 to a 120 gallon tank

I agree. No big deal if you do it all in one day. Three year old sand not worth it. Keep maybe a cup.

I’ve done it twice in last 6 months. First new floors, second new house. 190gallon Reef Savvy ( = very heavy). First time tank went through minor cycle just added bacteria (don’t know if that made a difference or not), this last move was only 4 days ago but all is well. Zero losses BTW for both moves.

You can sift sand all you want for CUC just don’t keep it, sand I mean. Keep CUC

I do 15 to 20% water changes every two weeks so debating to do one just before the change as well
