so been half thinking on this for awhile....
had anyone thought of crushing and very well rinseing charcoal instead of useing carbon
i know they use charcoal for filtering our water and was thinking it may work in the tank
any thoughts on this???
thanks guy n gals :)

dont they add alot of things to those little bricks to help it light easier and burn. Wouldnt that cause a huge issue in the tank

I don't think so on regular ones....
The matchlight ones I know have lighter fluid added......
N thats why was wondering and asking :-D

Aahhhh hhmmmmm........

I was thinking more along the lines of going buy a bag of kingsford and breaking it apart n rinseing it out..
Lol.
It needs a BIG rinse. Honestly not practical.

How much do you think that you can save on this? You can get 20 lbs shipped for $20-25 and I once got a 55 pound sack for about $75 shipped.

Most of the stuff in the aquarium hobby is coconut shell carbon which, IIRC, is lower in residual phosphate than hardwood carbon and more suitable for aquarium use. The reason might not be right since I am coming off of a decade-plus memory on this one. Dr. Holmes-Farley was probably the source and he would know.

Why would one do this? To save $?

yes alittle...
can get 17lbs from Wal-mart for $17
whats carbon like $20 a lb........
was just thinkin as like said earlier that i know its used for drinking water so why not??
