So, I suppose I’m starting this thread as a sort of catharsis. But beyond my tiny world, I feel like there are many fellow reefers who know exactly where I’m coming from here (or that’s what I tell myself, at least). I believe that, as we learn and mature in the hobby, we increase our skill set and earn the tools that make us successful. However, if you’re like me, you’ll always have your elusive unicorn. It’s that one fish and/or coral that you’ve never mastered. No matter how much experience you gain, no matter how nice your setup, and no matter how many times you try...you will never tame the unicorn. I’m curious to hear if anyone else has a personal unicorn. If so, what coral and/or fish is it? Do you continue to try to achieve the dream, or have you given up? How long have you chased your unicorn, and why?

For me, it’s the Potter’s Angel and pretty much any goniopora. I’ve been successful with much more finicky critters, but never those two. After 4 years of trying, I think I’ll admit defeat.

I am not sure that I have really been reefing long enough to have a unicorn . . . I only have been in the hobby for about 2 years. However, I have always wanted a McCosker's flasher wrasse. But I QT everything - - - I have had 2 that sadly have not even made it through QT. Even a third that my coral guy ordered for me, and the day I went to pick it up (and he was beautiful and eating), and he was crushed under a rock!! It was awful.

So - now I have my third (or 4th). Just got him on Sunday. He is beautiful. And clear. And eating TONS. I am letting him settle this week and will start prazi next. So - here is hoping!!
