In the process of trying to sell my lights I have had a lot of questions about my mounting arm, so I figured I would start a thread explaing how to make a nice looking cheap mount.
What you will need:
1/2-3/4" PVC pipe, ~$2.50 for 5'
Saw
Drill
wire , zip-ties or rope
2 90* elbow
Spray paint
mounting brackets $3/10 count
Steps:
make measurements of how high you want the light to hang above tank (measure from where you will attach the mount, to the desired height above tank. Make measurements for how far light will extend over tank
Cut PVC
Drill holes through each side of one of the openings of 1 elbow
Attach elbows to mounting arm (piece that will extend over the tank, elbow that has holes drilled in it should be over the tank, with the holes on the on the non connected side)
Spray pipe desired color
connect mounting arm to light pole, Feed cord through pipe*
Screw onto tank using mounting brackets
*This part can be a little annoying so you have two options
Option 1)
Disconnect kessil light fixture from rest of power cord (there should be a little round black area a few inches from the fixture, this comes apart) Feed the longer power cord side up through the pipe and the out the mounting arm area, reconnect light to rest of power cord. Thread wire , zip-ties or rope through the holes and tie it to the stock kessil hangers (little triangle things that came with light and screw onto top). If all looks good, mount to the tank stand in desired postion using the brackets.
Option 2)
Same thing as option one but instead you first screw the long piece to the tank stand and drop a piece of string down it, tie to the longer power cord and thread it back up the pipe, then just follow option 1.
I now these directions are not the clearest but I will be breaking down my lights soon so I will post a picture guide on how to do it in the next day or two. Please ask questions if you need to, it will help me refine the directions. This type of mounting arm is super cheap, easy to make and can look really nice....and did I mention its really cheap to build?
