It is cheap at first but the proprietary filters will cost you more in the long run. My advice is to get a basic 4 stage unit that uses universal filters.

no, not worth it the filters do not last very long at all. I had the aquatic life twist in as my first rodi filters would last 2-3 months which got costly. Then I had something get through it in my city water supply and caused me to lose about 7k in high end corals. I then bought a bra 7 stage 200gpd with zero issues and I love it. Id get a brs 5 stage min because you need protection no matter how good your water is. Your saltwater will only be as good as the water you start with. Also 50gpd is extremely slow id go with 100gpd min. I only make 5 gallons at a time and only do small 5 gallon water changes. A RODI is not a piece of equipment to cheap out on and I found out the hard way with my $100 unit.

Lots of people say 4 stage units but if I look at my tds meter I still get tds after 4 stages especially when the filters are getting close to changing time that's why I say 5 stage min.

2 ways to look at it:

1) It might be an adequate solution possibly saving time and money over purchasing RODI water whilst saving money for a better unit.

2) In the long run like what others are saying here, more costly, I would agree if the purchase is for a long time solution.

I have not done the maths nor do I know the quality of the production water, or the unit itself.

Theres a good chance you have Cloramines in your water sonyou would need a 5 stage. 40gal total isnt much. I'd buy a couple 5gal rodi from the LFS and refill one when 1 gets empty. Get a good skimmer. You dont need to do bug water changes if you have a good skimmer and a balanced reef. I'm talking max 3-5% every other week. Just enough to vacuum the sand.

Well my pet shop is a hr away one way so really wanting to stop making trips there

The last one I post good
The white canisters look universal, the clear di tubes on top I am not sure about. If they can be opened and repacked, looks ok. I am curious as to what they are packing into those canisters, calling it a 7 stage.

In the post I don't see any kind of mention od whats in the filter or what stages it is in. just buzz words and marketing BS. And considering the cost it could just be empty shells, without the resin or carbon blocks inside.

Another thing to note about that unit is you do have solid canisters not clear, so you would have to be very proactive in knowing when you replaced your filters and watch your tds for when to replace them. While not impervious to mishaps and failures the clear allow you to use the color changing resins for easy knowledge of when to change.

EDIT:
found a link on the page for the filter and stages kinda defeating what I previously posted :

1ST STAGE 1 MICRON SEDIMENT FILTER
2ND STAGE GAC WATER FILTER
3RD STAGE 1 MICRON CARBON BLOCK WATER FILTER (CHLORAMINES AND CHLORINE REDUCTION)
4TH STAGE 100 GPD MEMBRANE
5TH STAGE COLOR CHANGING DI FILTER
6TH STAGE COLOR CHANGING DI FILTER
7TH STAGE COLOR CHANGING DI FILTER

Can someone send me a link to a decent one for cheap I’m on a low budget

I think most people say that because most people can get away with a simple 4 stage. You can always add another canister right?

This is not correct, I recently saw @Randy Holmes-Farley talk about this in another thread. He has a 4 stage and it removes the chloramine from his water. He also tested many others water for an article and normal 4 stage RODI systems with regular carbon filters worked just fine.

I would go with this: https://premiumaquatics.com/products/aquafx-economy-4-stage-100g-rodi-system.html

You can always add another canister if you want and you will want to add inline TDS meters and a pressure gauge after the carbon stage but that can come later. Also, I don't know about the quality of the filters it comes with but I'm sure it will be fine and you can buy the BRS ones that I believe are of good quality. And if you're worried about chloramine just check your water provider's annual water quality report to see if they use chlorine or chloramine.

I have a 40 breeder with a 20 sump. This is the one I use. It has been running almost a year and I have had nothing but 0 tds water. All filters still original. I like the psi gauge so I can monitor my water pressure and the clear canisters to view filters. My TDS going in is between 70-90 and coming out 0. It has the sediment filter charcoal filter ro mebrane and di resin

I would always recommend a unit with 10" housings and never horizontal DI stages. SpectraPure BRS AquaFX Buckeye Hydro there are tons with their own pros and cons. Mainly look for features you need and you can upgrade later or anytime
