I decided to switch from a Mars Hydro 24 watt grow bulb (worked pretty well) to get a slightly wider angle/higher wattage one (went with the TaoTronics as above, 36 watts). I pondered the new full spectrum one vs the old one with lots of good reviews; I decided to go with the older one as it's a more known quantity and I don't know enough about the new "full spectrum" LED's on the new one. Gold would have been prettier than green, though!
Some guy on the TaoTronics review section went into great detail as to why they liked the TaoTronics best . . . assuming that their information is accurate, it seemed like a pretty good deal.
I'd think that the next step up would be a large Mars Aqua or a high wattage Kessil of some kind, but that then puts you into a significantly higher price bracket.
I'm also skimmerless on a Red Sea Reefer 170, btw - my filtration is just macroalgae (dragon's breath and gracilaria in the display, chaeto and dragon's breath with a gracilaria frag in the refugium). Half of my refugium is also "coral frag rehab", so I would definitely get more macro in there if I moved some of the frags and small corals out of there. There's also some purple Vargas cespitularia propagating in there as well, a Duncan frag, a Caulastrea that's recovering, and a Wesophyllia that I can't tell yet how it's doing . . . and my sole Tubastrea polyp is actually doing well without spot feeding.
