What’s a good cheap sump light for chaeto?

Trying to avoid skimmer on the new 170!

I just purchased a MarsAqua par38 grow light. The bulb is only around $15 on Amazon.

I just started using it, so can't tell you if it is working great or not yet. But others recommended it...
I just bought the same light, it seems to be growing pretty well.

I use this guy:
TaoTronics LED Grow Lights Bulb, Grow Lights for Indoor Plants, Plant Lights, Grow Lamp for Hydroponics, Organic Soil, Applicable to Grow Banana, Lemon etc. ( 36W, 3 Bands, FREE E26 Socket ) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HPIPM70/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_HkJ9zbX477SXQ

They also make a more full spectrum-ish version which is new. It has pretty good reviews as well.

I use a black box LED I had on my first tank. I run white channels only and blast the chaeto with light and it grows just fine, no need for anything fancy unless you are going for aesthetics.

I decided to switch from a Mars Hydro 24 watt grow bulb (worked pretty well) to get a slightly wider angle/higher wattage one (went with the TaoTronics as above, 36 watts). I pondered the new full spectrum one vs the old one with lots of good reviews; I decided to go with the older one as it's a more known quantity and I don't know enough about the new "full spectrum" LED's on the new one. Gold would have been prettier than green, though!

Some guy on the TaoTronics review section went into great detail as to why they liked the TaoTronics best . . . assuming that their information is accurate, it seemed like a pretty good deal.

I'd think that the next step up would be a large Mars Aqua or a high wattage Kessil of some kind, but that then puts you into a significantly higher price bracket.

I'm also skimmerless on a Red Sea Reefer 170, btw - my filtration is just macroalgae (dragon's breath and gracilaria in the display, chaeto and dragon's breath with a gracilaria frag in the refugium). Half of my refugium is also "coral frag rehab", so I would definitely get more macro in there if I moved some of the frags and small corals out of there. There's also some purple Vargas cespitularia propagating in there as well, a Duncan frag, a Caulastrea that's recovering, and a Wesophyllia that I can't tell yet how it's doing . . . and my sole Tubastrea polyp is actually doing well without spot feeding.

I have this on my 2g fuge and it grows cheato like a beast. The light is actually quite large.

you have a link to this? I can't seem to find it.

If you are going to try and use the chaeto instead of a skimmer you will need to be getting some insane growth, the only light i would recommend in your case is the Kessil H380. For this price point however you might rather buy a skimmer and get a cheaper grow light which won't have the same results as the H380.

Just go to Home Depot and get a 6500k led flood light and a cheap clamp on fixture and it will grow some serious chaeto. Attached a pic of my growth over about a week and a half of growth it tripled in size.

No point to waste time on ordering the "right thing" from china? I've been thinking that my oceanrunner 2500 blasting directly at chaeto could be a good reason why it won't grow....

What’s the right thing? Everyone I have ever seen every local fish store run a cheap clamp light and bulb and never has any issue growing chaeto. The bulb is a philips par38 5000k from Home Depot with a ceramic some fixture.

yep, sorta points towards direction i'm thinking too, the flow is too strong and kills the weed. Will shut down the runner and get a proper overflow wall inside my fuge...Thx!
