Looking at picking up a used jbj 24g nano cube, but want to mount LEDs in it & prefer to be able to dim or control them (no controller).

What is my best option? Cheapest option?
thx

When you say "prefer to be able to dim or control(no controller)". Did you mean dim or control without a controller or you don't have a controller? Also is this a biocube?

I don't want to have to use an Apex. I want it to be stand alone. I want to be able to control the intensity and the color, so I can go more blue than white)

It's a JBJ Nano Cube - 24g. Currently it has an old CFL lamp set-up in the hood.

I think the easiest mod to that would be to remove the lid, remove the rim, add a AI prime HD. Total cost, $200. Tools for rim removal not included. Otherwise if you are handy and can cut plastic and wire some DIY leds to a controller and have it properly installed, $200+/-.

I'm pretty handy, don't mind moding the hood. This is a second tank, for nems and clown. My nems have killed too many acros in my tank, time to move them out.

What $200 DIY LED kit can I get? I looked at Steve's & Rapid & both are $350+. I even thought about cutting the top out & adding a black box.

I want to keep the hood on though. It is going in my office and I want it to be simple AIO type. No fuss.

Yeah. DIY isn't cheap especially when you get into fancy controllers. Whats the true benefit? couldn't tell you.

Have you looked at

https://reefll.com/

https://blueacro.com

Both DIY options above are compatible with the Bluefish controller($200) or possibly the more affordable Storm controller($90)

If you are comfortable with cutting the lid, you could just fit any nano light like the AI prime HD.

Ebay has this

Not sure if it will provide enough par for the bubble tip.

@Ledreef put a 16" reefbreeders photon v2 in his cube. His nems look fantastic. Looks clean too. I believe Reefbreeders have photos of it on their site. He's also here on r2r

Yeah, I saw that guy on ebay, but you have to send over the hood. I'll look into the other 2 options. I'm picking up the old 24 for a song, so $200 won't be bad to mod it. Much more than that & I might as well buy something else. I already have 1 money pit, my 105g.... I don't need a second. lol

I had a similar dilemma when I had a JBJ28. FYI, the older JBJ28 takes the same hood as JBJ24. I had both the HQI hood and fluorescent hood....didn't like either one. All the retro kits were very costly and the JBJ LED, which had just come out was $400+. What I did was build a canopy and used a Chinese black box that cost less than $100. I no longer have this tank, but if I were to do this canopy again, two changes to alleviate the moisture problem....I'd use plexiglass on the front arched piece and would leave the top open.

HERE's a link to that build....and here's a picture of the canopy:
