It depends on your setup.
Mine started growing/pulling nutrients right away because I have it tumbling in a dedicated space and it's getting a ton of light from a 150w HPS grow light.
Just because you tossed some cheato in your overflow doesn't mean it's going to do much for you.
If it's getting proper flow and light, it should start growing immediately. If it's growing, it's pulling out nutrients.

You can figure roughly the amount of nutrients removed by the amount of mass added as it grows.
Harvesting 10 grams (dry weight) of a typical macroalgae would remove roughly 24 mg of phosphate (plus or minus a factor of about 2 for different types of macroalgae) from the water column. That amount is the equivalent of reducing the phosphate concentration from 0.2 ppm to 0.1 ppm in a 67-gal. aquarium. This would also be equivalent to reducing the nitrate content by 2.5 grams, or 10 ppm in that same 67-gal. aquarium.
