Cheato or not?

In the case you described it might be worthwhile to dose nitrates to have the chaeto remove phosphates if you are concerned about PO4 and don't want to use gfo or other phosphate removal media. Some people believe the algae has additional benefits like pods or other byproducts such as amino acids and other metabolites and even potential allopathic chemicals that inhibit things like dinos. However it's not proven the above occur in useful amounts in our systems.

I would say just take it out if you are curious and see how the system goes for a month or two. Realistically I don't think you will see a tremendous change either way, however when I had lots of Mari acros I found them quite suspectable to browing with elevated phosphate so just keep an eye on things and change if needed, ime too many people become too dedicated to an idea and ignore what the system is telling them.

If you remove the Chaeto do you still run the lighting at the same schedule, reduce it or remove it altogether? Besides helping with the pH swing running the light opposite the tank lighting what other reasons would you keep the light if there isn't anything for it to grow?
