cheato or rock?

I have seen alot of stuff about cheato being used in the fuge but it requires light for life.. no biggie but can that be replaced with live rubble and no light? and if so whats the benifits to either one??

Different benefits come from each. The Cheato can clean your water of Phosphates and Nitrates, whereas your rubble won't do much but work on the Nitrates, and not much, as you probably can't add enough to make a huge difference.

Either way you'll have a safe haven for pods and micro-inverts that make a good cuc. It's called a fishless refugium because the fauna is safe in there from predatory fish. They will reproduce and trickle into the display tank to clean and provide nutritious morsels.
