Check out this cool fish I purchased today!

[Miami Reef]

I saw it pop up on Live Aquaria’s website yesterday. I religiously check that website and never saw this fish before in my life.

Today I went to the LFS to get microbacter 7 and I saw they had this weird cool fish. The same one from the live aquaria website.

It’s a wrasse, a Hortulanus Wrasse. For some reason it gives me a Japanese vibe (those dragon piñatas). It also resembles a dragon wrasse (not reef safe).

This guy IS reef safe! And it helps control coral pests like flatworms! I immediately purchased it. It’s currently residing in my quarantine tank.

I like my checkerboard a lot, but theywill kill/eat your cuc. Dont seem to ever bother coral directly but like many wrasses are not opposed to knocking frags over just to see if anything good to eat.

Oops. I just doubled checked and live Aquaria does state they can eat crabs and tiny shrimp.

But in my opinion, even crabs aren’t reef safe as they consume snails.

Lucky for me, I use urchins and starfish as my CUC. I doubt I’d get problems with this wrasse.

Heh. Maybe I’ll finally go all out and get a harlequin tusk.

But live Aquaria did put the checkered wrasse in the reef safe wrasse section.

My wrasse ate some hermits. Then he tried to eat my scarlet reef hermit and got hit lip clawed. He never messed with anyone after that. Absolutely hilarious watching him try to shake off my big scarlet though.

No it was a green corris. I just meant sometimes they do stop messing with your cuc. Mine for pretty big before he even started messing with anyone

I saw a Checkerboard Wrasse for sale at WWC a few months back-- nice size, full adult coloration and pattern. I should have bought it.

Most Halichoeres wrasse - In this case H. hornulatus, will be put into the reef safe wrasse section, the reasoning for this is because of how they will eat crabs & snails if given the chance. My jade (H. chloropterus) has yet to do this but supposedly when she transitions she will get aggressive, ugly and hungry/destructive - If I was to guess from all the warnings, aggression from mine is worse than something from the scottorum complex. I prefer H. hornulatus because of the colours staying a nice range however they get big so I’ll just watch yours grow (And with the moorish). For sure a nice wrasse though!! The snails/inverts that stay safe are things like cleaner shrimp and large 2” shrimp aswell as the snails/hermits that are nocturnal. I find my two shrimp only come out when lights are blue and the jade is more in bed. My snails are fine (Nassarius & maybe 2 of my bumblebees) because they’re now nocturnal, also I find that mine don’t go after inverts added at night or before them. That’s the easiest way I have two “RSWC” wrasses in with a bunch of snails and inverts.
