I went to install an old bubble magus skimmer in my other tank and had the forethought to remove it from the skimmer and check the pump. Good thing I did. Note the crack in the plastic housing that has allowed tank water to reach the metal windings within.

Yikes! I'm glad that you caught it when you did and neither you nor your livestock were harmed. Have you done a test or treated for metals?

I was using this skimmer on my anemone tank about six months ago before removing it and placing it into storage. I never noticed any issues with livestock and my guess is, the chaeto in my sump absorbed what iron was being released judging by the rust stains.

This is the second failed skimmer pump i’ve caught. The first on was a psk1000 pump where tank water had crept in between the epoxy and power cord. I smelled ozone while working around the sump, picked up the skimmer as it was the closest thing to my hands and the power cord literally fell out of the back of the pump and thankfully landed outside of the stand. Yikes.
