Hello! I am a medical physicist turned stay-at-home-mom (well...mostly). I just had my first baby 3 months ago and I thought what better time to try my hand at something that I have wanted to do since I was very young (but never had time available to do so). So here I am ready to create my own slice of the ocean! I am from Ohio and the closest thing we have to a body of water is Lake Erie and I am not brave enough to stick my toes in it let alone explore the biology. I decided this would be a wonderful learning experience for my daughter, something that as she gets older she can learn what it means to have compassion for animals and nature, responsibility for care of others and just how cool science can be. Yes she's young but she loves looking at the local lfs fish! After reading for months, I decided a BC29 would be a great starting place (Santa happened to agree!). I've always had freshwater aquariums but now it's time to step it up a notch. I am new to participating in this forum though I've been reading as much as I can. I am excited to share my experience as well as soak up all of the knowledge collected here. Thank you all for your time and I look forward to interacting with you! ~ Lindsey

Welcome to reef2reef Lindsey! Glad to have you here!

Biocubes are great tanks, I have one myself. Good choice for starters!

Welcome! I'm very curious, what does a medical physicist do? Sounds like a very interesting field.

Thanks everyone! I am really excited to be here! For those who are curious, a very general definition of what medical physicists do can be found here. It's a specialized field of experts in the science of radiation and its interactions with biology. Personally I am a therpudic RP which means I worked in radiation oncology treating cancer. I focused on stereotactic radiosurgery of brain tumors and high dose therapy for cervical and vaginal cancers. Day to day physicists are responsible for the radiation safety of the patients and staff. We are involved with everything from the radiation prescription to the treatment planning and delivery of that prescription to the patient. This includes ensuring all equipment is calibrated and tested to deliver the dose of radiation required by the physician. If you have ever received radiation treatments, it's guaranteed that "behind the scenes" a physicist has collaborated with your physician on your treatment course, reviewed and possibly planned the delivery of that course and has run the linacs through many quality assurance tests. I apologize for the long winded response, lol, I am very passionate about this field and tend to ramble when I geek out. ;)

Welcome. I started a Biocube in August.
Hi! I apologize if I missed a start up thread but I took a quick look and failed to find one. If I may ask, how did the start up process go? Are there any huge "duh, do/don't do this" tips you have? Are you in the process of adding more critters or are you stocked up at this point? I'd love to hear your story if you have the time (or link me if I missed it!). Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to R2R;)

Welcome to the family!

Thanks all! Now as for proper r2r etiquette, should I post my thoughts about proceeding with this tank (general ideas, stocking wish list, timing, etc. and their related questions) on this thread or should I create one of those "follow my build" type threads in the bc forum? I have several questions (and requests for sanity checks) about the tank and want to start in the right place. I am doing lots of reading and hope to avoid anything that could have been answered already but this is my very first sw tank and I don't want anyone to get hurt! Thanks so much!!!

You are welcome to follow up in this thread, start a new post in the reef aquarium discussion area, or start a tank build in the members tanks area (I have a link to that last one in my signature). Ultimately, we're not strict around here, so feel free to post where you think it seems best (if necessary, we can move your post for you so it gets the best location for responses). I think I would probably encourage you to start a new thread for your question so that people realize the thread is more than just an introduction.

Once you get into the actual building of your reef, I DEFINITELY want to encourage you to start a build thread that we can all follow and enjoy with you. :-) I hope my answer is helpful (and not confusing). :-)
