I try to avoid adding things like Chemiclean or Red Slime Remover to my 90 gal mixed reef tank, but in the course of a lengthy cyano battle just did my second course of Chemiclean in six months. After both chemiclean addidtions I noticed that once complete, the primary overflow drain in my Bean Animal/Ghost Overflow set up needs to be adjusted closed to balance the pump return vs drain.

The drain pipes are black PVC, there is no way that there is algae in the pipes themselves. The entry and exit points of the pipes have no physical obstruction. I use a high quality gate valve to control flow, it needs 5-8 full turns CW to balance inflow/outflow.

Has anybody else experienced this? Just trying to figure out what's going on.
