ChemiClean making cyano worse?

Hey all,

Ive been battling red cyano for a while now. Recently, it’s gotten to the point to where it’s really on my nerves. All my parameters seemed perfect,yet it still wasn’t going away. So, I decided to try chemiclean. Dosed yesterday evening, and this morning it seemed to be doing it’s job well. However, after the lights came on, all hell broke loose. Not only the the cyano increase, but it began to get stringy.

any tips for what could be going on here?

sorry the pictures aren’t very good. Having a hard time taking accurate photos of it.

Hmm.. It kinda looks like we may have the same thing going on in our tanks. I just posted a thread a couple hours with some pics of mine. I assumed mine was dinos since it wasnt really all that slimy like cyano but now I have no idea lol... Mine started getting stringy and spreads across the sand and rocks almost immediately after the lights turn on.

Get a cheap microscope and make sure it's not dinos. What are your nutrients. Nitrates, phosphates? Neither one should be zero.

Did you remove all the media?
Did you add additional flow towards the tank?
Did you point your powerhead above the water to creat bubbles?

They’re both close To zero. I was dosing nitrates to try to get it up, but I think the cyano was gobbling it up. Hence I don’t think it’s Dino’s.

yes to all three... perhaps I just need to wait it out a bit.

It wil take at least 2-3 days for chemiClean to kick in. Leave lights off for about 3 days (at least the whites).
IMPORTANT: Did you siphon up the algae BEFORE you treated? If not, its like sprinkling sugar over brownies

Yeah give it time.
Whenever I have the issue and chemi clean I see good results after 48-72 hours

I didn’t siphon beforehand unfortunately. I definitely should have.

I thought I had cyano for months and did 3 courses of red slime treatment and it kept getting worse. I thought my nitrates and phos were 0 because I had a ton of gha in my sump soaking it up. I got a microscope and turns out I had dinos the whole time. Took me about 6 months to finally knock them back.

Also VERY VERY Important- Do Not feed coral food or add NoPox during the days few days as it can spark dinos and promote cyano

okay, just got rid of whites, reds, and greens. What’s the best way to get rid of dinos if this doesn’t work?

Honestly, IME when cyano starts to die it starts to string. It doesn't necessarily mean it's dying, but I think it's par for the course if it is.

For Dinos:
Prepare for a water change and blow this stuff loose with a turkey baster and siphon up loose particles.
Turn lights off for 5 days and st night dose 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for all 5 nights
During the day dose 1ml of liquid bacteria per 10 gallons.
Clean filters daily and DO NOT FEED CORAL FOODS OR ADD NOPOX as it is food for dinos.
Day 5,, you can start with blue lights and work your white lights up slowly

Okay awesome... I will pray that the cyano is taken care of tomorrow, if not I’ll either get a microscope, or just go the Dino route..

dinos have bubbles in them, correct? I just ordered a microscope but It won’t be here till Monday. looking at my infestation, I’m not seeing many-if any bubbles. I don’t really have any algae, and I was dealing with high phosphates a few weeks ago. So I’m thinking it’s cyano

Yesa they do. I suspect Cyano is the issue

Dylan, if you clean that tank it will be fixed. There’s a reason we’re out to forty pages with no ID, no nitrate or phosphate testing, and no retail purchases

if the water dosers dont work, join up there yours is likely to turn out like the rest/200 fixed tanks

so i woke up this morning, no marked change in the culprit. one thing I’m noticing, this stuff forms ONLY where it gets light. the sand around the base of my corals, comletely white, not in direct sunlight.
