Anyone ever had chemipure stress your corals? The first time I used it, it stressed my corals so I took it out. About a month later I put it in the same bag again and had success. About 2 weeks ago I switched out to a new bag and man did it stress my some of my corals. At least i think its the chemipure, its the only thing i've done differently lately. So far i've had a plate coral die, a rainbow acan mini colony, and almost all of my chalices have receded. Chemipure seems to be the only thing I can blame. I sat down and did all my tests the night before last. Here are my readings, all test done with salifert kits.

Temp 78
Salinity 1.026
Alk 8.9
Cal 440
Mag 1270 (a little low, but wouldnt cause coral death)
PH 8.00
Nitrate less than 5

I even checked nitrite just in case, zero

I really am stumped here. My sps seems ok albeit I only have 2 sps frags. My softies are good other LPS is ok. Just the 1 acan, fungia plate dead, and all my chalices receding!

I've used Chemipure Elite for many years in my Nano, never had any problems.Have the corals that died or are dying been in the tank long?

It's just gfo and carbon so its possible it striped the water too fast. I would change it more often so it doesn't get exhausted allowing the phosphates to rise.

I've been using it for ages too and never had a problem. It does contain GFO which can drop phosphates fast - I've read that can stress corals. Maybe test for phosphates and bring them down gently with a phosphate remover then use Chemipure Elite to keep them down.

Do be sure to rinse it thoroughly - as with any carbon, carbon fines in the tank are bad, especially if you have tangs.

All the corals that have died or are receding have been in my tank for no less 2 months. Most longer than that. I rinsed the bag for several minutes under the faucet and then rinsed with RODI water.

Dang I have always used chemi pure elite.in all my 6 tanks I never have had any thing like that happen. Any possibility.of contamination cleaning chemicals, pesticides or any thing along those lines? I'm just trying to think of any possible cause.

Nothing I can think of. The sad part is its not effecting all my corals. Just chalices, which is what kills me!!!

That is really odd. I maintain a 12 gallon JBJ nano cube. I have chalices, one acan, zoas, frogspawn, and a ricordia.

I just started using chemipure elite at the end of last month so it's not even been in there a month...and zero problems what so ever. Chalices are growing very well for me even.

I wonder...how often do you do you water changes? Im not sure how it might affect CE but it may play a role that someone else can pick up on. May build up of phosphate if waiting too long between wc's and then chemipure does something bad?

To much light on the chalices? Again just thinking out loud for ya

Very interesting.... Changed our my CPE last week and some of my softies looked a little upset, wondering if it stripped the water too fast. First I've heard of this.

LPS in general prefer some low level phosphates. One of the reasons why a mixed reef can be difficult. Your P04 couldve been right on before you added the GFO, or it could've been stripped too rapidly. I'd shade the pieces for now, get a Hanna phosphate checker and lose the CP elite until you figure out where you stand with phosphates.

CPE is mostly carbon, with a sprinkle of GFO and a resin

Any carbon can quickly clarify water which bumps the par and upset some corals.

Chalice will definitely recede with too much light

I also use a phosphate pad to reduce phosphates. I've still got a bit of algae in my tank so I was hoping to reduce that. I also just put new bulbs in on Tuesday, but the chalices were receding prior to that. I'm truly stumped.
