So I got my buddies old tank a few months ago and have gotten it to a good place. Even has sps growing in it now!

I’ll be upgrading to a 40b here in the next few months and promised my friend I won’t trade in the cherub. But he’s an butt. He’s constantly beating up the goby (going bare bottom in the 40 so the goby and shrimp are going to the LFS) but I want to be able to add a few fish after the tank transfer.

What can I add that won’t get beat up? I was hoping to add these small gobies I saw at the shop called red headed gobies but after watching this angel get progressively more abusive I don’t think that’s such a good idea.

What are my options here? Preferably utilitarian fish that serve a purpose. First thought was six line wrasse. Anything else?

Edit: would also be great if the fish stayed relatively small. Not a fan of big fish in tanks unless their 500g+

the likelihood of the cherub beating up any fish you add in there is very high. If possible it is good to put him in a different tank for a few days and rearrange your rockwork when you put new fish in. After a few days you can add him again. If you don't have an extra tank you can rearrange your rockwork but he'll probably become accustom to the new tank setup before your gobies and will become aggressive again.

anyways fish I recommend. Purple firefish, court jester goby, sandhopper blenny, canary blenny, starry blenny, cardinalfish like a couple flames or a benggai. Some of these aren't compatible and obviously they can't all be added. Also you can never go wrong with a pair of clownfish

The fish you listed are less likely to get beat up by the cherub or just general recommendations ?

After the upgrade the rockwork will change a bit, the tank will obviously be bigger. Hopefully that’ll work.

If you want something less likely to get beat up I'd go with an older pair of clowns, blennies, or cardinalfish

You can add fish that are also feisty buttheads like any hawk fish, maroon clowns, damsels, a good size lawnmower or starry blenny, any Zebrasoma Tang.
