Chiller question?

I have no mechanical filtration and ran a 1/4HP chiller for 6 years with no issues. I had it in the return pump circuit so it got the cleanest water returning to the display.
A couple times a year I would disconnect it and run a vinegar solution through it recirculating in a 5G bucket for an hour or two and you do b=get quite a bit of gunk out of it.

Yes, one chamber of my 30G sump is a refugium containing cheatomorpha algae and a little live rock rubble I use to attach frags to.

I never ran any filtration in front of my chiller when I had one. Most likely your pump impellar will get plugged before anything big enough to plug the chiller will get past it.

If I run my sump without a filter can stuff get caught in my chiller?
Wow, I've had a chiller that I've used at least 8 years and I never even thought about that possibility but it definitely seems plausible. I think I'll make sure at least big particles are caught.

OK thanks guys. How big is your DT and how often and how much water changes do you have to do with no filtration?

I do have calerpa in the sump to help with nutrient export. Also I have a HOB skimmer, a prism pro so not the greatest but it does pull nasty stuff out so it must help some. I do 4g a week on a 36g with a 10g sump.
