Hey everyone!
I am in the process of a tank build. The display tank is 40"L x 24.5"W x 18", I had it custom made by planet aquariums with the ghost overflow. I believe its roughly 70 gallons. Its sitting on a custom stand I've made measuring 5ft long by 3ft wide, and 3ft tall. Inside the stand I have a 40g breeder. I will be using a hamilton cebu sun 250 watt mh+t5 fixture with supplemental blue stunner strips.

My question is, what kind of chiller would you all recommend? and what size?
Are chillers meant to be outside of the stand itself for its own airflow?
I plan on building a canopy thats roughly 2 feet tall with the mh suspended inside with fans on each, pushing, and pulling air.

Those dimensions give you 76.36 gallons. I have a Teco chiller I'm happy with. You're right about chillers not being in the stand. They do put out some heat when running.

IF YOU CAN, drill a couple 1" holes in the wall and install your chiller outside. They heat up a room something fierce and are not that quiet. As msderganc suggested the JBJ chillers are a good product. Go with a flow thru and not a drop in. Pick up water from the sump and return to tank or you will never have an accurate temp reading.

Sorry, the rest of my post must have gotten lost. That calculator is a good baseline for sizing a chiller. JBJ is a good brand, but there are others out there that are good too. Take a look at the others, but make sure you look at the specs closely.
