Hi all,

I got Arctic’s 1/5hp chiller. I calibrated temp of the chiller to my tank which is 78. After few minutes the chiller temp either drops 1 degree or goes up 2 degrees. I have two controls that both say 78 and 1 crystal stick and meat thermometer all say 78. What could be the problem?

Hi Max,
Those chillers should control to +/- 1 degree Fahrenheit.
You said you already calibrated the chiller temp display to match what you measured your water at.
Be aware that no two different temp, sensors will read the same, especially when measuring in 1/10th degree increments.

The chiller has an internal temp sensor, so it will read different from one that is in the tank or sump.
It’s normal to see the drop and rise on the chiller temp dis

Quite a few that have a chiller, actually do away with the factory one on wire in a single stage Ranco and place that temp, sensor in the sump for better temp control.

What size tank do you have ?
There could also be issues with the chiller compressor short cycling, since it could meet temp too fast and come on too soon....this will cause the compressor to try and start, but won’t until the refrigerant pressures equalize.

I have 90 gallon display and maybe 30 gallon sump. I never heard it run. I got it for hot Cali summers so right now it doesn’t have a reason to run but I don’t understand why temp on chiller fluctuates so much. Sometimes it raises to 80.2 and chiller starts to turn on but it drops .3 degrees and it stops. I did test it and it does cool when I set the cool temp lower. I understand that no two thermometer would show same temp but I don’t understand why my chiller is off 2+ degrees and it has swing up/down
