Finished up a waterchange today on my 90gallon fish tank. Walked by it about a hour ago and found my chinstrap jawfish lying on the sandbed with shredded fins and buoyancy problems. Took him out and put him into a quarantine tank I have. Some parameters I tested:

Salinity: 1.024 sg
Ammonia: 0
Nitrates: 0
Nitrites: 0

Currently have on hand API Melafix and was going to start treatment right away. Any recommendations? Have had him for 6 years now and really don`t want to lose my star of the tank.

Is it possible he got attacked by a tank mate, or was hurt by hitting the tank lid if he jumped??

Stock is just a pair of sunburst skunk clowns. Not sure how they would of beat him since he never left his hole. Sadly he passed. Going to try to figure out how he got beat up.

Did you QT any of your fish? Ever see any flashing or scratching on the sand, rocks or even the glass or equipment from any of the fish?

Nope. Looking at him now he has what looks like internal bleeding marks on one of his sides. Eyes are a bit cloudy. Qt all my fish for 3months and run the usual treatments for worms, flukes, and ick. Haven't added any new livestock in the past 3 months so I'm at a loss if it's something disease wise.

Do you know if your clowns have laid any eggs? Clowns become very aggressive when they have eggs and will stop at nothing to protect them. Also there could be a crab or mantis shrimp that could cause the internal bleeding but not the fin problems. COuld have gotten stuck in a powerhead...My new clownfish swam strainght into a powerhead yesterday hes all good though. So stuff like that happends.

Power heads definitely a possibility as when it was time to feed he'd hover by it and grab food as it came out of the pump. The clowns do have eggs but have never shown any aggression. Had a dotty back who lived under ledge where the eggs are and he was the one who got removed for aggression. Don't think a mantis could of gotten into this tank, been setup for 8 years now.

Jawfish tend to get this disease that takes them down pretty quickly. It usually starts like this with lethargy and the red spots on the sides or underbelly. I can't remember the treatment for it, but even that was not quite proven. I'll look it up.

Bluespot Jawfish Disease = Metroplex + Kanaplex for 10 days. I've cured it a few times this way.
