Hello, I got a new to me 90 gallon tank reef ready with the bottom drilled. The tank was filthy. Looked like a boat anchor. I filled it with water and let it sit for a week outside on my covered porch. No leaks! I started cleaning it and I managed to chip the edge in the middle of the side. ***! So I ask a gang of people if it's trashed. Everyone had a different opinion. Great right. So I filled it with water again. It has now sat full for another week. No cracks nothing spread. Most importantly no leaks. Before I start the clean up process again I'd like to see what yalls thoughts are. The chip is relatively small. I also planned to clean off the old silicone and reseal the inside of the tank.

I think it's best to view your situation from a risk vs reward situation. I'd predict there's a 99% chance that chip will never spread. Which means it really depends on where the tank is going and what your planning to put in it. Is spending, say, $300 now on a new tank to prevent a flooded living room floor? Or, is this tank going in the basement where only the contents would be lost? And are you willing to risk a 1% chance of that?

I'd also highly recommend not resealing the inside of the tank unless you really know what you're doing.

as long as the chip is only on the surface, I would still use the tank. I small chip on the edge like that shouldn't do anything to the structural integrity of the tank, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck and God bless you!

The pictures make it seem like two different chips. Whats the one on the inner edge? It doesnt look related to the corner middle.

There is only one chip. I was trying to show it from both directions side view and front view.

Those odds sound good to me. Why do you recommend against resealing? I use caulk regularly at my job. I feal confident in my ability to lay a even bead. That being said the glass prep and removal of the existing silicone seems to be something in my wheelhouse. Is there anything I might be missing? As far as the prep and reseal? Thank you for the info and help.
