Chloroquine Phosphate (CP), a replacement for copper sulfate

I use Chloroquine phosphate as my go to medication for protozoan parasites (cryptocaryon irritans, amloodinium occelatum & brookynella hostilis).

I would not agree with its use as a bactericide at all however, one of its strengths is the relatively minimal impact on filtration bacteria. Secondary bacterial infections can be common under CP treatment.

Sources of medical grade chloroquine phosphate should be used, the most popular of which is Avloclor, obtainable from on-line pharmacists, depending on your location.

My personal therapuetic level is 10-12mg/litre of chloroquine

Wow thank you looks like I may be able to order it.

How much of the 250mg tablets would I need to treat a 20g qt ?

Each Avloclor contains 155mg of chloroquine base, so 1 tablet per 15l gives you 10.33mg/l as a therapeutic dose.

Just making sure I get this right so 1 tablet for 4gallons ?

That is correct. CP is fairly forgiving and effective in a wide dosage range in comparison to copper sulphate. A 10mg per liter dosage is on the conservative side while more aggressive doses up to 25mg per liter are also known to be used. 10mg per liter is the way to go in most cases.

Another way to look at it is. 1 250mg caplet per 4 gallons is fine. If you made a mistake and accidentally dosed 1 pill per 2 gallons, the dosage won’t automatically be a death sentence for your fish. A similar dosing mistake with copper sulfate would most definitely kill all your fish.

I can’t say I’d use this level of dosage and not expect a lot of casualties TBH. Wrasse will certainly not tolerate above 15mg/l in my experience.

10-12mg/l for 21 days has been very effective for me for both anyloodinium occelatum and cryptocaryon irritans

10mg is the preferred dosage and wrasses are definitely in a category all their own. Wrasses aside, the medication is used successfully in a wide variety of dosages effectively and without the harmful impact that would is reported when over or under dosing copper sulfate. Based on the literature, even a proper dose of copper sulfate leads me to believe that there are significant ill effects and may shorten the lifespan of a treated fish. With CP, not so much.

Thank you for this. An online pharmacy is asking for my symptoms and details. Would they sell it to me if I tell them it is for fish? My wife has some things wrong that I could list if needed, and still be honest. :)
