Question: Think of switching from using copper in our fish systems to Chloroquine Phosphate. How do you manage the drug with the amount of water removed for bagging ?

The real problem is Chloroquine has a half-life of roughly 30 days, and also is subject to biodegradation if dosed into a tank that has been setup for more than 3-4 months.

I wouldn't even attempt this without investing in a spectrophotometer so you can measure the Chloroquine in the water.

There is a LFS that I frequent that does use CP in all of their fish tanks. One way they manage the levels is my doing regular water changes with a known amount of CP. @Humblefish can you go into a little more detail about the biodegradation?

This explains in more detail: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/qt-and-biofilm.292878/

A public aquarium employee who used to post on here (I forget the username) stated that biodegradation would begin to occur after a few months. (They tested their QTs daily using a spectrophotometer.) To knock the bacteria back, they would dose chlorine (100ppm maybe?), wait for it to gas off and then reseed the tanks. This would buy them another few months before biodegradation would start to occur again. I personally break all my Chloroquine QTs down every couple of months, and sterilize everything with bleach.

Very interesting. I know we discussed that CP is bactericidal, but didn't know that it could be broken by bacteria. My QT is still running without any fish with CP, will definitely take it down.

We used to do a large water change and then dose each tank before shipment, on avg 25-40mg/l. after a week we did a water change and dosed half doses.
When disease outbreak was evident, we added a half / full dose depending on fish species and it brought things under control.
Display tank lights & UV caused the CP to degrade and we had a dull brown looking water. It didnt kill any fish that I can say was due to the degradation.
We were very successful flying blind but ideally I would want that spectrophotometer.
