I have a 12 ft 600 gallon tank fish only at this time with a parasite problem. Looks like ick or velvet, can anyone give me advice reference CP, was told that I will have to dose for 7 days and due a 25% water change each day, then some say one dose is sufficient for 21 days?

Package says on small tanks 7 day 25% water change and redone and if large tank as mine only one dose and leave, well what gets confusing is I. spoke with a rep of that company where I purchased CP, he advised that big tank still needs to be re dose 7 days with 25 % water change!

And my last question CP ok on sharks, eels, puffers, wrasse and hippo, was told by company again it is safe with all of the above. But in forum some say no!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!Thanks for your time.

Most Wrasse won't tolerate CP. Hippos won't either.

Where did you get the med?

I have never heard of doing WCs daily with CP. It's a medication that needs to be kept therapeutic to be effective.

Also if you are using it in a FOWLR you will need to run for 30 days. 7 days won't cut it.

7 days would be the absolute minimum for treating in a QT. Personally when using in a QT I would not recommend any less than 10-14 days. When treating in the display tank with the parasite affliction you have to keep the medication therapeutic long enough for all of the encysted tomonts releasing free swimmers to burn out.

The other tricky part of treating in a display is it's a guessing game as far as dosage goes in order to maintain your level. Things like biodegradation, absorption, etc. Can cause the level to drop, since there isn't a suitable in home test kit it can be problematic.

Copper may be a better option in your situation as you could at least monitor the level with a Hanna checker. Although sharks/eels may not tolerate copper.

I was told this to do wc for 7 days by the person who sold me the CP who suppose to be a expert for 30 years, I agree with you I'm probably better using copper, can you please advise the level it should be kept at. Bought a Hanna copper checker and was getting different reading with it. Called Hanna tech support and was told that their copper testers are really for freshwater and not salt and won't give you an accurate reading if using it in marine aquarium.

I really appreciate your time in helping me what should be the duration of copper and which brand do you recommend (copper power or cupramine) ?
Thanks Again looking forward to your reply

Which copper checker do you have? The high range or low range?

Personally, I prefer chelated copper. I use the copper power with the high range checker.

I don't know when or who you talked to at @Hanna Instruments, because for over a year now it's been verified that so long as you are using the high range model (HI702) it is suitable and accurate in saltwater.

Here is the verification:

FYI I am not questioning the expertise of whoever you got the CP from. I would be interested to hear the reasoning behind the WCs for the 7 days?

Unless they are doing so to make sure the dosing stays as consistent as possible since there isn't a suitable test kit. As I mentioned in my previous post though, if you are using the meds in a QT where fish can be transferred out of the therapuetic medication and moved to a clean sterile tank it would make more sense. Parasites will still be alive and cycling at the 7 day mark. Since you are treating in a DT, you will need 30 days minimum of therapeutic medication for both CP or copper.

Please one more question? What is the range for the copper to be at and leave it at that range for 30 days? Ordered the Hanna Checker now, thanking you in advance for your time in this matter I really appreciate the advice. Carl

It is recommended to get copper to 2.0ppm for the 30 days.
