Finally got my ell out the DT into the QT. dosed 40mg into the 10gal, provided PVC for hiding. Air stone for aeration, HOB filter without carbon, powerhead, will only be using ambient light , and Ammonia alert tag. My issue was a tiny bit of gravel was also brought in. I removed most of it but still couple in there. I assume the CP will handle any issues.

The DT going fallow now 72 days. The CP purchased did not come with much instructions beside the dosage. I know CP a one and done deal. Anything else I should do? The eel might be remaining there for the fallow period. I have another 30g tank but don't want to introduce any possible illness to it.

I will keep a log here of the progress.

An anemone, 2 horseshoe crabs, starfish and nassarius snails remained in the fallow tank. Will feed every 2-3 days a bit of food to keep bio going.

Following. I am curious - where'd you get your CP from?

Not sure what happened with this, but I wanted to tie a bow on this thread incase someone looking to use CP stumbles upon it....

OP, 40mg/10 gallons is MUCH less than the recommended dose for CP, and that is prophylactic treatment levels...

For a 10 gallon tank you need 400mg CP for prophylactic treatment.
For a 10 gallon tank you need 600mg to 800mg of CP for active infections.

See this for the entire post on usage of CP:

It all depends on the strength of your CP. I got mine from ebay not diamondback drugs, and it says 40 mg gal, or 80 mg. Means it is a higher concentration. See thread on acclimation and quarantine for beginners by Brew12. I just posted there with this.

I disagree.

The recommended dosage for fish QT is anywhere between 40-80mg per gallon.

40mg/gallon for prophylactic
80mg/gallon for active infection

Chemical concentrations are measured in molarity.

It does NOT "depend on the concentration of your CP" itself. This doesn't make any sense. The concentration of how much you add in solution to your QT tank makes a difference (40 vs 80mg CP per gallon of tank water).

The distinction is important so as not to confuse people into thinking they need to buy/find the right concentration of CP. you buy CP and then you determine the concentration for/in your QT.

Hope this helps

You are correct about this in terms of concentration - CP is not like, say, hydrogen peroxide, which can come in different strength (or concentration) solutions. I do know that there are two different forms available to us, which do have different concentrations though, so you have to dose relative to whether you are using pills or powder.

Also, there is some evidence that the CP powder purchased through ebay can be ineffective. Purity would have an impact on effectiveness, so people do need to find the right purity of CP. I am not saying that all ebay CP is bad, but I just ran some infected fish through a couple of days of ebay CP, at 80mg/l, and the CP did not prevent the fish from being reinfested after 3 days. Resilient strain of ich, or bad CP? I probably will never know, but I've read enough reports on here about the questionable effectiveness of ebay CP that I was suspicious about it, and now have exactly one experience to confirm it for myself.

The problem is that I can not find a local vet that will even consider writing a script for CP. So, faced with no other options, I gave the ebay CP a try, with a skeptical eye from the start. Is it a purity issue? Perhaps it was exposed to light before it got to me? I don't know; all I know is that it wasn't effectively treating the infestation, and I switched to copper.

I'm in your boat @foxt in not having a vet to prescribe, although next time I take a cat to petsmart, I'm going to ask there. I went with an ebayer who said his product was 99.9% pure and has good ratings. It was the best I could do and seemed to do the job.

My ebay CP looks like it was from the same batch as yours (not perhaps the same seller, but same batch number and expiration date), and it didn't prevent reinfestation during treatment. Aside from the purity, since light can degrade CP, there is the possibility that the stuff I bought wasn't being stored properly. I'd love to eliminate the source as a variable, and just get the stuff straight from diamondback or some other pharma-grade supplier.

I never thought about asking at Petsmart. We have one nearby, and I will give it a try (can't hurt).

Be advised, CP is a controlled substance....so if you are somehow getting it without a script, it could be illegal possession. Not likely that the fuzz will come after you for it...but still.

That said, you need to find an EXOTIC vet. A vet that is trained in exotics (birds, reptiles, fish). They are the ones that will be willing to listen to you.
