Chloroquine phosphate

don't mix cp and liquid prazi. You can use general cure -which has prazi and metro in powder form.
Hi Meredith...First of all my 65 has no signs of anything...yet...not even flashing ...anyhow...bought a tomato clown from my lfs, of course he's QT'd and I put in CP...should I be feeding metro with focus as well...get rid of any belly worms...thanks and regards...Ken;Pompus

Why not...just tell him its for fish...even the crankiest around here does it for me...
Easier said than done. I called 7 vets including the one I bring my 3 dogs to (where I have spent thousands) and they said no also. The only one who would make a house call wanted over $400 just for the visit and it was a week out.

I bought from Fishman and my porcupine puffer (who was the worst, covered in velvet) is doing very well. His fins are scarred up still but his body is clean after just 1 week.

I would have preferred to get it from a vet and pharmacy, but that didn't seem to be an option. I also have a bottle of ich shield that gets good reviews.

No, not unless you see signs of a need for it (white stringy poop)

I find it strange that multiple sources in the industry say to dose CP multiple times (not one and done)... I read fishman chemicals suggest using it every 5 or 10 days, which everyone laughted at.. . But I just ran into diamondback's suggested usage too.

"The typical treatment involves adding five to ten milligrams of Chloroquine per liter of water every five days for a minimum of four treatments. However, your veterinarian or aquarium specialist will provide more detailed instructions for treating your unique case. "

Fishman has 2 recommend dosages for small and large tanks.

+1
I'm also a little confused as to why this treatment hasn't caught on and more research done on it. I see post after post of fish diseases and the go too is copper.

Another thing is this list of fish that are sensitive to this medication. Anthias and wrasse. What is this based on? A couple of experiences? A few hundred experiences? Just curious. I would think that same fish that dies in cp would also die in copper. It seems that the deaths are always blamed on the treatment, when there are a lot of unknowns with the fish itself.

If you are speaking of my list, it was based on many experiments done by @Humblefish and data gathered from the members here and various customers from the store I work at. It was a compilation of data from many sources and a general consensus as to the safety of these chemicals with certain types of fish. Each fish is an individual so they may be affected differently, but that is usually the exception and not the rule. Copper is a poison, CP is not. That is a fundamental difference in the two chemicals.

Yes the fundamental difference is quite drastic. That's why I ask why we're stuck on copper. Cp is the safest way to treat using medications, yet we as a hobby still want to play with poison. I'm just trying to understand.

I thought I quoted this in my first post.

Copper is easily attainable at any LFS, CP is a bit tougher.

I bought from Fishman (which is still a bit taboo), but the best way is to find a vet that will give you a script. In my area it seemed impossible.

That's probably why people keep using copper. I have a porcupine puffer so copper and hypo were out of the question. What were my choices? I'm glad I found this thread and also thank Bob Fenner for recommending CP.

+1 CP is "a work in progress" ... All Hippo Tangs, anthias and wrasses are considered "CP intolerant" for the time being out of an abundance of caution, until more research can be done. Most "proper research" that is done has financial incentive. Since CP cannot be utilized by the aquafarming industry, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this research. ;) (You won't find too many studies on copper for the same exact reason.)

So, in the meanwhile you're stuck with anecdotal evidence from people like me & Meredith and sometimes public aquariums share info as well. But they're typically short on staff & funding - most "employees" are just volunteers, with just one Marine Biologist in charge of everything.

I'll call Diamondback to find out exactly why they're saying to do multiple dosages.
