I know what your think. What did this guy just say milk dosing? But it's not actual dosing....

My cousins 2 yr old son decided that the fish wanted some chocolate milk.... Needless to say the tank got. Little cloudy. We are unsure on how much went in but I'd say 4-8 oz.

The skimmer lost its head instantly. Tank size is 155 display and 40b with cheato sump. Have done a 25 gal water change and making more water. 100lbs rock and 160 lbs special grade reef floor. Been running since October and fish went in January. 2 clowns and a yellow tang. Fish seem doing little better after water change. Was slight heavy breathing.

Has mostly soft corals and some Zoas. Leathers closed up pretty quick and one lps in the tank a blasto was open but not fully. Zoas open but defiantly not happy.

Planning another 20gal change tomorrow. Told him to keep eye on skimmer and fish.

Anyone ever had this happen??

Thanks.

@melypr1985 just went through this, although it was not the chocolate variety. I tried to find the thread but couldn't. Hopefully she'll see this tag and respond on how she handled it.

Kids I tell you...

My 3 yr old son fed his betta a cup of milk a couple days ago. It's a 5 gallon freshwater planted tank with just the one betta in it. When I saw, I drained the tank most of the way down and scooped the fish out and put him in a mug with RODI water in it for the night. Since he's a betta, he was fine over night in the cup. I did two 90% water changes and the tank was still cloudy. I added Carbon to the filter and the next day did another large water change after I made more water. I'm not sure what the effects would be in a saltwater tank or on the corals in there. I will say that the betta showed distress and heavy breathing while in the cloudy tank. He was added back in the next day after the 3rd water change and acted distressed for a bit, but was fine by lunch time. I think a large water change from the bottom of the tank is in order. In freshwater the milk sank toward the bottom - not sure if this will be true in saltwater- and if it does sink then you want to siphon from where it's the thickest. Run a good amount of carbon in the sump too. If you can get the fish out and into a clean QT for a couple days that would probably be best for them, but if not, then just do your best to dilute the milk. The cloudiness may remain for a while after the first couple water changes, but the best thing to do is to get the dairy product out of the water as much as possible, as quickly as you can. You can keep doing 20% water changes as often as possible for the next couple of days. I hope this turns out ok for you. I'll be following along to see what happens.

Wow glad his tank is more than 5g!! And it's my cousins tank if my 12 yr old did that we have bigger issues haha!!

There is good amount of flow so I think if it settles it will be in the sump. So we may just do a complete sump cleaning on it. I'll be going back by his house tomorrow after work.

Glad to hear your Betta made it!

I'd be tempted to add a couple air stones or try and do something to increase air exchange. I would think the Tank just got a big carbon dose which could lead to a bacterial bloom.

I read the title to this and said what the heck; people will dose anything now a days, after reading it I flashed back to when my 3 yr old wanted to let the fish change the channel on the tv... New remote! Good luck!

I always find wierd stuff in mine the worst was my oldest son's ipod. I have 5 kids and my tank was up long before they were born so the first 3 kids just enjoyed watching the fish but the 4th one has been obsessed with it since he could walk, he's 4 now and i still get phone calls everyday at work about what he's done to it like getting a cup a spoon and some water then the freezer where he pops a cube or 2 of brine shrimp and since he cant get the lid off anymore its dumped into the sump

Man, my kid did the chocolate milk thing to my 5 gal nano and also shared his hot dog and crackers. Needless to say, he wiped out everything before I caught it. There was also an incident where I was very ill and had to use a urinal bottle while bed ridden. Well, the boy saw this and decided to "top off" my top off jugs. That was a disaster too. I then placed the tank and top off water out of reach. Kids... ya gotta love them since you can't kill them.
