I’m planning on buying a harlequin shrimp to take care of my Asteria starfish but want to feed him chocolate starfish too and wanted to know if I could propagate them in this hob fuge successfully so I wouldn’t have to keep buying chocolate starfish.

I don't think that would work but I have just not had any luck keeping several alive. If it does work let us know, I would totally give it a shot!
I was planning on maybe 3 of them and cutting a leg off at a time and putting food for them inside the hob fuge. I’m not gonna try it though until I find out it can be done.

I tried that same thing. I don't know that their legs EVER actually grow back. It takes way too long. I just buy a whole one every couple weeks to throw in the tank.

Agreed...tried having three to rotate and they never grew the limbs back quick enough....but thats a great place to hold a couple so u dont have to go to the lfs so often

Why don't you propagate the Astrea instead?
lol because mine have a sweet tooth for lps and they don't need propagation they multiply like rodents. I've read online harlequin shrimp need more food than just asteria starfish but not 100% sure how accurate that is but I was planning on feeding it a chocolate starfish leg once every couple weeks so it doesn't starve.

If you put the Asteria in a breeder box with a lid, like the one you have pictured you don’t have to worry about them eating your lps, and they multiply safely in there

Lol I don’t believe you understand the nature of Asteria , they are a pest and I never intended them to be in there hence the reason for wanting to buy a harlequin shrimp to eliminate them all. Chocolate starfish is what I wanted to feed the harlequin shrimp once the pest are gone I’m telling you there’s a butt load of these Asteria in my tank.

the nice thing is the harlequins are super easy to catch... Let them wipe out your tank, then rubberband a choclate leg to a small rock. He'll come out eventually then just grab him.

I've had one before and it ate a lot of asteria but not all before he died so I would hate to buy another one to watch it die again, I'm guessing the asteria wasn't enough nutrition to keep the harlequin alive

Yup I know what they are like, but they will multiply quicker than the chocolate starfish can regenerate so you can always have to food ready to go when the shrimp has desimated the tank population

They can be hard to track down but you could consider a nardoa starfish instead of a harlequin shrimp. They are good asteria hunters as well.

you cant really frag a star. it only works on algae, corals and nems.
