Recently purchased a Chocolate Tang I got him home drip acclimated for 45-1:00 then placed the fish in the tank. His breathing was fast for a few minutes then calmed down. I noticed he has a line from his eye going back and he hasn’t accepted food yet. He stays near the bottom and basically seems to be in a trance. Should I attempt to catch and take back or should I just offer multiple feedings and hope for the best??

I really dislike long drip acclimation and hate that I see it suggested so often — as soon as you open the bag water all the fish excrement quickly turns to ammonia and it’ll burn the fish’s gills in short order. My entire acclimation procedure is 20 minutes or less and it works well. 3 cupfulls of tank water (or dual cup fills depending on starting amount of water) 5-7 minutes apart.

Anyway, that aside I suspect ammonia burn. Methelyne blue baths work well to sooth ammonia burned gills, if it persists.

Lines sounds like HLLE, a better photo without the blues on would help. Good luck! :)

The fish was only in the bag for 30-40 minutes would ammonia build up that quickly? I will update photos tomorrow.
