Alright guys my new BTA got chopped up in my gyre. What should I do? I want the tank to survive.

carbon and big water change
Thanks. Basically it’s entire foot was still good. It’s tentacles just got sucked in. Skimmer seems to have pulled a lot out (was cleaned yesterday). Put 2 cups fresh carbon in. Started mixing some water for a change. Will be adding a 40G tank as a frag tank later today after I drill and plumb it in. Hopefully extra volume will help.

Other BTA is probably laughing at this guy.

Some people have had luck keeping "shaved nems" but I've always had them die once they get badly mangled. Keep an eye on that one and be ready to remove it if if dies it will add a lot of nutrients and possibly foul your tank.

I flushed the torn up nem down the toilet already. They’re of the same variety. I just traded an acro frag for it yesterday because a guy in my local club didn’t have room for more than one after his split. No big deal. They’re gorgeous nems though so it is very unfortunate...

One last question: is there something measurable in the water I should be testing for? I assume the nutrient situation isn’t that terrible since I removed the foot.

Sorry to hear about your nem. You can probably find some mesh covers for your power heads for reasonably cheap.
Thanks. I’ll look around. It’s a Jebao lol. Need to go get a gyre off of lazy that has the guards.

Net any and all pieces with fish net, then siphon fine stuff which in turn will be a water change and utilize carbon for clarification. Ive lost sea hares and a nem or two and no disasters - just milky looking water

Have taken these steps. Got everything possible. Water was milky but filled an entire reactor with ROX 0.8 carbon and water is crystal clear. Everything has extended polyps etc.! Would it be safe to say everything will be fine?

Yes, due in part to the actions you took. If water did not clear- concern would come in. Test water for ammonia and Nitrate tomorrow AND again Friday to assure tank is stable as My guess is, it will be

I have 2 Gyres that I swapped out because my Carpet decided it didn't want to be on the sand & went 24" up the side to climb into the gyre. Played hell try to get him out, it didn't make it.

Yikes- Got my carpet last August, placed it in the left corner and it has NEVER moved from there
