Well after calling the gas company and clearing out the house for a bit I realize the awful smell in our house was from an exploded Cobalt Neotherm heater. Cracked and appeared to have released chems into the tank. Everything seems ok, but some inhabitants appear annoyed. Running carbon and plan on doing a large water change today. What else can I do? After doing some research, I have found that a number of these have failed. I will certainly be calling them today. Thanks

Sorry to hear about the heater. The water change and carbon sound fine. I had a neotherm fail. Cobalt did send me anew one but it took them three months. In the mean time they sent me a temp therm to hold me over till the neotherm came in. Just curious, what wattage was the heater?

200W....of course!

Sorry to hear of your issue, that really sucks.I'm really surprised that since, it is well known in the aquarium industry, that heaters are a weekspot that someone hasn't come out with some "ultra reliable" heater, with a warranty at a premium price. The hobby has had numerous improvements over the years but yet we still get 1970's technology heaters with the exception of titanium heaters. Seriously I don't believe it's a total flaw in the technology as much as it is in cheap labor. IMO
