Since it's quiet in here, thought I'd add a weird experience I had last week. I've developed a harder to clean dark green algae on the bottom and corners of my tank. The mag float wasn't getting it done so I got a Kent scraper with the razor blade and 10 gallons of saltwater last week. Removed enough water to rinse the scraper off before using it and got to work on the front and one of the side panels of the tank. I noticed my 5 chromis were all acting weirder than normal and breathing really heavy so I stopped there and did the water change. Within 30 minutes, I removed 3 that has started to lay on their sides and go belly up somewhat. The fourth was completely dead the next morning and the fifth hasn't been seen since it all started so I'm assuming he's somewhere in the rock work rotting. I found other mentions online of a rapid chromis die off like this and it's always been centered around an algae cleanup operation whether glass or rock related. I have clowns, yellow tang, lyretail anthias, and a canary blenny left and all have acted normal throughout. No coral ever reacted to any of it either. Any ideas or suggestions going forward?

I remember you telling us this story at the meeting, I'm still baffled by it. Very strange indeed.

IMHO chromis arent as hardy as people think they are.
I think you really would have a hard time finding a 100% answer on this but I really hope you do I would like to know as well... I never heard of it and my chromis always never reacted anything like that.

Before I read that the rest of your fish are fine I was going to say you are missing something here and something went south on your system quick.

I never seen any issues with my Chromis while cleaning up algae.

EDIT: Regardless, I would keep a very close eye on your system for a while.

The last of my chromis is about to die too. All parameters are good. I have no green algae to clean so I haven't been. I am personally believing it to be a bully in the tank. Blue anf green Chromis are quite timid and do stress easily to the point of death IMO.

Looks into Uronema marinum/ sometimes also known as Chromis disease and pretty common.
