Do chromis need a partner or are they okay by them self's ? He always follows my clowns its funny but sad cuz my male clown picks at him when he gets to close

I've seen them by themselves and in a group both looking happy.

they feel more comfortable/happy in a group of three or more.

As I understand it, Chromis are schooling fish. I bought five of them for that reason because I wanted to be able to see them swimming together around my tank. So if by nature this is what they are wired to do, it may explain why he is trying to be near your clowns so much.
