Hello everyone, I get the feeling looking at posts about this stuff that you guys on the other side of the pond are more savvy with the eradication of this than we are in uk (limited info, and usually saying to reduce no3, po4) which I believe is my problem as I don't have any readings of these nutrients.
So. had this stuff for around three months of the tanks five month life.
Tank is based on a cross between your 30 and 40 breeder so more like a 35 breeder 36" x 18" x 14"(h).
and the whole system with sump holds 150l .
Bought some live rock from LFS which turned out to be second hand and full of po4, so spent first two months doing 2 x 10% water changes dosing lanthanum and using GFO.
It was only when the po4 got low (below 0.03 Hanna phosphorous checker) that I started to notice the white fuzz . I sort of identified as ghost algae and later confirmed its name as Chrysophytes.
So seeing some posts on here I tried all the things like scrubbing, taking out rocks and painting it with peroxide ,too no avail, i eventually cottoned on to the fact that it was thriving in this now low nutrient water as I have also never had a nitrate reading, probable because of the three litres of siporax and using FM Bacto=balls and big skimmer (for system, deltec sc1351)
I only had three chromis so not much bio load. I eventually resorted to Flucanazole and a three day day blackout which miraculously killed it all. The tank was pristine and coralline algae exploded.I took the GFO offline and the tank held at around 0.01 something for around three weeks and I thought the corner was turned. So, I thought to get some more nitrate in the tank as the montiporas I had were paler than my uncles colonies. So I introduced a fireball angel but still did not get a reading of no3, But , now , my po4 had also got to zero and now the chryso's are back.
So, do I add more fish , dose kno3 or remove Bacto balls or what. The only other thing which I recently changed was adding Tropic marin Bio Calcium because corals were sucking out alk/cal but could this have something in it which feeds chrysophytes lik some salts have which is why water changes can sometimes make things worse. I Dunno , but I got that sinking feeling again. Please help al you that have knowledge of this stuff.
Sorry for long post.
