Chrysus Wrasse with Orange-Back Fairy?

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions in regards to Orange-Back Fairy Wrasses. We got a really nice one in at work that I was considering picking up, but I've noticed a couple of potential issues... First is that the tank is only a 40 breeder, and I already have a Chrysus wrasse in there. I've had him a year and a half and never seen any aggression, but is there likely to be an issue there? The second is that LiveAquaria recommends 90 gallons for the Fairy but only 50 gallons for the (larger) Chrysus. The Chrysus seems quite comfortable in there, is the Fairy really that much more active? There is a lot of rock and halimaeda algae to break up site lines and provide hiding/exploring areas.

@Dragon52 I just ordered a Orange Back Fairy, Red Head Salon Fairy and Yellow Coris for my 262 gallon.

Any issue with aggression between your Orange Back Fairy and Red Head Salon Fairy?

I just realized after seeing a compatibility chart that there is a risk of mixing the two.

@Tuffloud1 FWIW I now have an Orangeback in two tanks at work and haven’t had an issue with either. One is with a Blue Margin Fairy Wrasse (Pylei) and a Line Spot Flasher, and the other is with a Red Velvet (Rubrisquamis). The Velvet is definitely the boss in his tank, and everyone gets along without issue in the other tank.

Not sure how it affects them being in the same complex, but I haven’t seen any aggression from mine, other than the first day that I added the three.

Those two together should not be an issue in a larger tank but a 40 breeder is way too small for an Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis or even the H. Chrysus.

Unfortunately, a 40 gallon tank is not suitable for this complex of Cirrhilabrus.
