Ok. At night my wife told me she heard a cicada noise coming from the tank. I thought she was crazy. She later showed me the noise and I did hear it. It sounds like a smaller/softer cicada noise. There is no way I have a hitchhiker as I used dead rock. No live rock was introduced. I have one clown, snails and 2 hermit crabs. Could any of these guys be making this noise?

Any chance there's something in a powerhead or cavitation/air bubble in a pump?

Could be a mantis shrimp. They make a snapping noise. Any missing fish, shrimps or anything?

Edit: I see you used all dead rock. But it’s only at night? Would leave me to believe it’s a creature rather than a piece of equipment. Maybe set a trap just in case?

It takes a small shell of a snail to do this in a powerhead. I agree also on possible mantis shrimp baby. Would be a sporadic click or snapping sound. Evidence would be dead or missing CUC, and they typically hide in a crevice with evidence of small mounds in the sandbed

No missing snails or fish. I have no idea. I have a KPS aquamai pump. Maybe its the snails hitting the pumps but everytime I step up and get near the tank the noise goes away. Its driving me mad

I wouldn’t rule out a hitchhiker. You’d be surprised what pops up in a SW tank. I would look into setting a plastic bottle trap.

Stepping up to tank and noise goes away would be the characteristic of a mantis backing away from your presence. Hmmm.... now I believe there is one
