I’m at a point with my tank And my reef keeping abilities that I am comfortable keeping sps thriving (growing and coloring up) and I think I’d like to get a maxima clam.

The only thing that concerns me is their ability to move around, do they explore the tank like a bubble tip or do they mostly settle in where you put them?

I appreciate any and all help.

Regarding your question, they only really move a inch or two at most according to what I’ve read and my experience tells me they only move a tiny bit when they are stabilising (mine closed, wobbled a bit, stabilised, closed, wobbled, stabilised) as for advice
1. Find appropriate lighting depth (like what level the clam is happy at)
2. Find a spot where it opens and the mantel does not flap in the current
4. Find a spot in that area you like and put it there ensuring it is stable
5. Observe

I've never had clam move around an entire aquarium but they won't always be happy where you put them. Make sure you have plenty of light and pick a spot where the clam is not getting blown around.

Yea if you give them enough light and not too much flow where they seem to be stressed they should stay. My experiences is that the smaller ones seem to navigate more to look for that sweet spot more than the bigger ones. 3” plus.

I appreciate all the info. I will take it all into consideration before I decide if I want to add a clam to my reef.
