Clam and snailly being best friends...

So this 'white growth' has been growing on my ninja star astraea snail over the past 3 months. I thought it was the snail growing out, turns out to be some kind of clam.

While this is a pretty friendship, it's not going to workout for either one of them. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What would be the best approach to separate them?
