So, I had a clam a squamosa that was beautiful and seemed very happy. One night I noticed a snail on top of the clam and the mantle retracted, and somehow overnight my heater became unplugged sending my tank to 68 degrees, I noticed the clam was more retracted than the previous day with the snail being on it but thought it was a combination of the heater and snail bothering it. The next afternoon I noticed the clams shell wide open and nothing inside, and I knew my clam was a goner but saw no sign of the body and assumed my CUC ate it overnight. Over the next couple of days, I got a large GHA bloom along with this reddish looking algae floating on top of the water surface, and I was wondering if the two instances were connected. I use RODI water, do regular water changes(15-20% every 2-3 weeks) and nothing else is effected in the slightest, none of my inverts, fish or corals in fact everything else is plump and happy as a...clam(no pun intended). Here are the results of my last 3 water tests, and I am currently making water to do another this weekend.
Ph 8.4 8.5 8.4
Nitrate 5 0 0
Nitrite 0 0 0
Alk 10.1 10.2 10.4
Ammonia 0 0 0
Calcium 500 480 480
Phosphate >0.03 >0.03 >0.03
My tank is a 75g mixed reef, has been a running saltwater tank for over 5 years. It is lit by a 6x54w ati t5 fixture and I have a 20L sump sump that has about 6-7g volume and currently only has live sand in it.
The only other thing it could be, which just seems odd to me is I built a new sump allowed almost 5 days for silicone to cure but took my HOB skimmer which has an option to be used in sump also and put it in my new sump, its making skimmate and doing well but maybe it used to pull the free floating reddish algae off the surface before? My overflow doesnt seem to pull it in, I watch it float right past.
