Clam in a new coral?

I picked up this zoa coral today, when I got home I noticed what looks like a clam/ shell in with the coral.

when I first put it in the tank

it now looks like it’s opened up a bit

should I be concerned about it?

It’s definitely a clam as I’ve just seen it open and close fast!

I might see if I can return it as don’t know if it’s safe

Clams and mussels are safe, this mollusk has been there for a long time and the zoa has grown in place on the shell with no ill effect, its a pretty addition

Its not a clam but common with zoa and is known as a bivalve which is related to the scallop grouping and not clam. It filter feeds and generally lives up to 2yrs or close to 4 under right conditions (flow, food, etc)

I've had one of these(mussels) in a colony of zoas for a year and a half now. Nothing to worry about and kinda cool.

Yeah I did think that as it’s obviously been there a while, gonna keep it if it’s safe as it’s pretty cool!

Thank you for identifying it for me, I was worried when I first seen it!
But now I think it’s a cool addition to the tank

That’s good to know, I was unsure at first but like you say it’s a pretty cool addition to the tank!
Only thing is sometimes when it shuts it makes the coral around it close.

Because they close rapidly
