Clam trapped my filefish

I had a post composed last night but forgot to send it, but came back today to see how things went. I’m glad everything looks (cautiously) good today.
Thanks for checking back in, and I’m happy that I’m able to report some relatively good news on this fiasco! Of all the things that we worry about in our tanks and all the things that can go wrong, I can’t believe this happened!

Believe it or not I have seen this but with a Copperband Butterfly and some form of unknown biovalve in my tank. Woke up one morning and as I passed the tank to get a cup of coffee the Copperband swam up and stared at me with great big eyes. If you are saying no, tell me there wasn't a clam or other form of biovalve closed on its mouth it would be a lie. Sure enough as night turns to day I lost the Copperband because the little thing never once let go...

Interesting enough this was back in 2000. I still have some of that rock from Fiji today and there are a lot of those little things around the tank. Also interesting is that I had two Maximus that recently died for some unknown reason. Tank is fine, clams looked great. One 4" the other new arrival from same source/vendor around 2" or so. One day the new one over night gone and 2 days later the larger blue. Never could figure it out.

Only thing that is new....is a matted file fish (to control my outbreak of aptasia). I also see it eating small stalks of Xenia (which I don't really care about) but this thread may caution me from replacing my Maxima's.

Glad your story had a happier ending. The suggestion of lights out while letting it run its course was the right action to take. Maybe not for your nerves but for the two parties in the tank - it really was the best move. Have a grand day!

So the moral of this thread is clams aren’t reef safe? They eat fish and are very dangerous!

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Glad it worked out.

I am so glad to hear the clam released the file fish and both are doing well! I hope the file fish starts to eat again.
I started following this thread this morning and I am relieved to know it went well. Also glad that nobody asked about your water parameters... :)

Thank you for following along, and thanks for all the positive thoughts and wishes. I has been nice, through people like you that have chimed in on this thread, that I haven’t felt hopeless throughout this.

Hahaha! That’s funny.

The file fish is still hiding under a ledge and coming out occasionally... maybe he’s just embarrassed and can’t face the other fish in my tank after getting his head stuck in a clam. Just for fun, I’ll snap a photo of the file fish once he starts swimming out into the main part of the tank again. He looks totally fine, he’s breathing normally, etc. I’ll feel even better once he starts eating again.
