How much flow do you have around the clam iilluisii? Thanks for the photo, that thing is a beast!

Great thread i have actually bred tridacna maxima before in the mid 1990s. I did get them out to spat size (2-3mm) before they would die. I am working on setting this up again to try breeding again. I think with the available micro food solutions now available ill have more luck. Here is a helpful guide in easiest to hardest clams to keep and maximum size to expect in general

Tridacna Deresa to 36"
Hippopus Hippopus to 18"
Tridacna Squamosa to 36"
Tridacna Gigas to 48"
Tridacna Maxima to 12"
Tridacna Crocea to 8"

Clams do need some nitrate and phosphate in the water for the zooanthallae colonies they harbor. They appreciate medium water flow, but not constant on them. Maximas and crocea should be kept up on the rock work, or use a dead clam shell for them to attach to. The rest will also attach to rocks gravel etc until a certain age then they will close off their bysuss opening and use their weight to hold themselves in place. All of them need intense light either halide or led. I have seen people keep them under t-5 but im not sure on the long term survivability under those lamps.

Great info Stlyaster. Thanks for the input and best of luck to you if you decide to get back into breeding them! I think with modern technologies and advances in the hobby you should have better success now a days!

I would get those aiptasia off that clam, They will irritate the clam by stinging the mantle. Easiest way is take the clam out scrub the shell really well with a tooth brush, swish off in a bucket of tank water and put the clam back in. Be sure to roll the clam to let out any trapped air bubbles

I just added 3 pepperment shrimp hoping they will eat them lol
