When do you guys think an appropriate time is to have a clam. My tank is also bare bottom. But I have seen clam shell holders that I would use. Just an idea. But more importantly how long are we talking. Are they hardier ? Thanks

if you can keep SPS you can keep clams. Similar sort of requirements.

I recently introduced a Crocea into my tank about a month ago. My tank (not bare bottom) has been up for 6 months and has pocis, acros, porites, leptoseris and montis in it. I can’t exactly determine whether or not 6 months is appropriate although my pocis, acros and montis especially are growing and colouring well. Anyhow this tank isn’t my only tank and is the youngest so if the corals and clams start heading south I can always transfer them back to my main SPS dominated tanks.
Regarding a clam shell holder or to be precise a clam cradle. As most of the lfs in my country don’t carry clam cradles I had to diy and create a clam crib. It’s basically taking small coral rubbles and super gluing them around a medium/large sized frag base. It looks like this, and my crocea has adjusted itself and attached to the crib quite quickly. The only complain is that detritus will gather in the crib so I do have to siphon it out during weekly water changed.

I will also add, while I don't recommend it, I put a small maxima in my reef jar with lighting provided by kessil a160 on the lid at 100%. It almost doubled in size in 6mo, I performed only 100% weekly water changes. There were no fish in the jar. I would add food for the corals a few hours before the W/C. The clam did great, it was only when I moved it down the road into a large tank that a sick divers den clam infected it and then it died, go figure.
